A few of the boys and I signed up to the Tristate Spartan Beast in Mountain Creek Resort in New Jersey, about 90 minutes from New York City.
It was the first obstacle race most of us had ever entered and we agreed that the 12-14 mile ski resort would be most suitable for a bunch of middle aged lads like us, as opposed to the standard 5-6 mile format.
We were off at a lightning pace and I found my trail and mountain running experience kicking in early on. I was loving the diversity of the terrain and the challenges of the obstacles to mix it up and the 3.5 hours of intense racing flew by.
I came 65th overall which was a reasonable result for my first race of this type. If I hadn’t had to execute the 90 burpees after failing three of the obstacles I might have pushed up a few places.
It was lot’s of fun and we are signed up to the Vermont Beast version in September.
